HAIR & SCALP HEALTH

Healthy hair starts with a healthy scalp

We often spend a lot of time thinking about the condition of our hair, but much less time thinking about the skin it grows from.

At Glamour Hair Boutique, we like to think of your scalp in the same way we think about soil in a garden: a rose bush can only thrive when the soil it grows in is properly cared for. Your scalp is the environment in which every strand of your hair begins its journey.

Oil, sweat, dead skin cells, product residue and environmental impurities can accumulate on the scalp. At the other end of the spectrum, the scalp can become dry, tight, sensitive, itchy or flaky. Conditions such as dandruff, dermatitis and psoriasis can also affect the scalp and require a different approach from simple product build-up.

That’s why scalp care isn’t one-size-fits-all.

At Glamour Hair Boutique, we can look closely at the condition of your scalp and hair, talk about what you’re experiencing and recommend a professional scalp-care routine appropriate to what we can see. Where something appears outside the scope of salon care, we’ll always recommend seeking advice from your GP or dermatologist.

ITCHY, DRY, FLAKY OR SENSITIVE SCALP

Why does my scalp itch?

An itchy scalp doesn’t necessarily mean you have dandruff.

The scalp is skin, and just like the skin on your face, it can become dry, irritated, sensitive or inflamed. Shampoo ingredients, fragrances, styling products, hair colour, over-cleansing, inadequate cleansing and other factors can all potentially play a role.

You may notice:

  • itching or irritation
  • tightness after shampooing
  • dryness
  • visible flakes
  • redness
  • tenderness or sensitivity
  • recurring irritation around the nape or behind the ears
  • a scalp that suddenly reacts to products you’ve previously used comfortably.

The important thing is identifying what kind of scalp problem you’re dealing with before choosing a product.

Wella Professionals currently separates its professional scalp-care products accordingly. Its Sensitive Shampoo uses allantoin and is designed to soothe irritation and reduce itching while cleansing without disrupting scalp balance. Its Anti-Dandruff Shampoo uses piroctone olamine to help remove flakes and soothe irritation.

Nioxin takes a similar approach. Its Scalp Recovery system is specifically designed for itchy, flaky scalps and dandruff, whereas its Scalp Relief range is positioned for dry, itchy scalp relief — they aren’t presented as the same problem.

Flakes don’t automatically mean dandruff, and an itchy scalp doesn’t automatically mean you need an anti-dandruff shampoo.

We need to look at the scalp first.

OILY SCALP, BUILD-UP & DEEP CLEANSING

Is your scalp actually getting properly clean?

We often think about shampooing our hair, but what we’re really cleansing is the scalp.

Your scalp naturally produces sebum, the oil that helps protect the skin and hair. But excess oil can combine with sweat, dead skin cells, dry shampoo, styling products and environmental impurities, creating build-up on the scalp and around the hair.

For some people this can leave the scalp feeling oily soon after washing, heavy or uncomfortable, while others may notice visible build-up or flaking.

This is also why cleansing the hair and properly cleansing the scalp aren’t necessarily the same thing.

When shampooing, concentrate your shampoo at the scalp rather than aggressively rubbing it through the lengths and ends. Massage gently but thoroughly with your fingertips, paying particular attention to areas that are easily missed — including the crown, behind the ears and the nape of the neck — then rinse extremely well.

At Glamour Hair Boutique, we always shampoo twice. The first shampoo helps remove surface oil, styling products and impurities; the second allows you to properly cleanse the scalp and hair. If you regularly use dry shampoo, styling products or go longer between washes, this can be particularly important.

When does your scalp need something more?

Sometimes regular shampooing isn’t enough.

Persistent flakes and stubborn dandruff require a different approach from ordinary oil or product build-up. This is where a targeted professional scalp treatment can be useful.

System Professional Purify Shampeeling is an intensive scalp treatment we can recommend for clients experiencing persistent, difficult-to-remove dandruff. Wella describes it as being formulated with its Dermapure Complex and recommends a treatment cycle for stubborn dandruff rather than using it simply as an everyday shampoo.

It’s an important distinction: not every flaky scalp is dandruff, and not every oily scalp needs aggressive cleansing.

Over-cleansing or continually using products that aren’t appropriate for your scalp can be just as unhelpful as not cleansing thoroughly enough. A dry, sensitive or irritated scalp needs a very different approach from a scalp with excess oil, heavy build-up or persistent dandruff.

It’s about balance, not stripping the scalp

The goal of good scalp care isn’t to make your scalp feel “squeaky clean”. It’s to keep it clean, comfortable and balanced.

That’s where professional advice can make a difference. At Glamour, we can look closely at your scalp, talk about how often you wash your hair and what products you’re using, and recommend a cleansing and scalp-care routine suited to what your scalp actually needs.

CREATING THE BEST ENVIRONMENT FOR HEALTHY HAIR

Your hair starts at the scalp

A good scalp-care routine isn’t about promising that a shampoo will suddenly regrow lost hair. It’s about caring for the scalp and the hair fibre appropriately and choosing targeted products for the concern you’re actually experiencing.

Your Glamour Scalp Routine

A healthy scalp needs more than a one-size-fits-all shampoo. At Glamour Hair Boutique, we look at what your scalp actually needs — whether that’s removing excess oil and product build-up, calming sensitivity, or providing targeted care for persistent flaking and dandruff. Your personalised scalp routine may include professional System Professional Purify treatments such as Purify Shampeeling for intensive scalp cleansing, Purify Mask as a deeper weekly scalp treatment, and Purify Lotion, a leave-in treatment that can be applied directly to the scalp as part of an ongoing anti-dandruff routine. We can also incorporate targeted Nioxin scalp products where thinning or hair fall is a concern. Most importantly, we’ll help you understand how often to cleanse, how to shampoo your scalp properly and which products are appropriate to continue at home. Think of scalp care like skincare, the right routine starts with understanding what your scalp actually needs.

For clients also experiencing thinning or increased hair fallFor clients also experiencing thinning or increased hair fall, Glamour can introduce targeted Nioxin products.

For example, Nioxin’s Night Density Rescue Serum is a leave-on overnight scalp serum. Nioxin says it is designed to promote the appearance of thicker hair, with the brand reporting results after two months; it’s applied directly to the scalp and left on overnight.

Its Hair Fall Defense Serum is a different daily leave-on scalp treatment. Nioxin reports increased hair anchorage with visible results in eight weeks in its cited double-blind study, while the accompanying Hair Fall Defense Shampoo is designed to remove build-up and support stronger hair from the root.

Your Glamour scalp routine might include:

CLEANSE
The correct professional shampoo for your scalp — whether the priority is sensitivity, excess oil, build-up, flaking or thinning.

TREAT
Targeted scalp treatments where appropriate rather than simply putting another conditioner onto the hair.

MAINTAIN
A home-care routine selected for your scalp condition and lifestyle, which may include professional scalp serums such as Nioxin’s daily Hair Fall Defense Serum or Night Density Rescue.

Let us look at your scalp

Your stylist sees your scalp from angles that you simply can’t see yourself.

If you’ve noticed itching, sensitivity, excessive oiliness, flaking, build-up or changes in your hair density, tell us during your appointment.

We can look at the scalp, discuss your current shampoo and styling routine, identify visible areas of concern and recommend professional products and salon care appropriate to your hair and scalp.

And if what we’re seeing suggests something that shouldn’t be treated cosmetically, we’ll recommend that you speak with your GP or dermatologist.
